This is the most appalling place I visited in Koh Samui. I wann't able to go through any more than half of the exhibits before I had to feel the establishment in tears. The way those animals were being kept - it was digusting and cruel. Tiny cages, suspended wire floors with nothing more than a broken piece of cement sheet or rusty piece of corrugated iron to give them some reprieve from the horrid wire underfoot. A single porcupine - desperate for company - was trying to bite his way out of the cage, forcing his nose through the cyclone fencing to get close to people for what little attention and company he could get. He had lost most of his quills from either parasites, ill health or stress.
Monkeys with wire wrapped around their necks as collars, then chained to a cross bar so that they could entertain the visitors. One monkey had managed to wrap his chain around the crossbar multiple times, and was on the ground, having to stand on tippy toes to prevent himself from hanging himself.
Monkeys made to perform for visitors. Made to entertain using human mannerisms - it looked ridiculous! These amazing animals being "whipped" if they didn't act like little humans, merely for the entertainment of the stupid tourists.
Eagles in a cage that wasn't big enough them to flap their wings and fly. Cockatiels in the tiniest of cages hanging everywhere. An Asian Bear (cage was labelled "Musk") living a lone existence in one of these awful wire-floor suspended cages.
It was an awful place. I understand that the locals were simply trying to make an income, but to exploit animals like this, and not be caring for their social well being, is nothing short of disgusting. I will never again visit that location, and would never recommend anyone else to do the same. |
